Align Gut Health: What You Need to Know
The short answer
Align is Procter & Gamble’s probiotic brand, and its core capsule contains one strain, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum 35624, studied for years under its older name, B. infantis 35624. The research on that strain in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is mixed: two early trials found symptom relief, a later U.S. trial in people with bloating found no difference from placebo in symptom severity, and meta-analyses disagree. One label detail matters: a capsule guarantees only 10 million live cells by its “best by” date. Some Align products, such as the DualBiotic gummies, don’t contain 35624 at all.
Ultimate Gut is published by Ultimate Health Solutions, which sells a yogurt maker, probiotic capsules and an inulin fiber supplement. None of the products reviewed here are ours, and these brands don’t pay us.
Product facts below come from Align’s U.S. product pages and Supplement Facts panels (labels checked October 2026). We did not buy, take or test any of them. Align products are dietary supplements, and the FDA is not authorized to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are sold.
What’s in Align: the main products
| Product | Strain or ingredient per serving | Amount | What research exists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Align 24/7 Digestive Support capsules | B. longum subsp. longum 35624 | 10 mg; 1 billion CFU at manufacture, 10 million (1 x 107) until “best by” | Several IBS trials with mixed results (below) |
| Align Extra Strength capsules | B. longum subsp. longum 35624 | 50 mg; 5 billion CFU at manufacture, 50 million (5 x 107) until “best by” | Same strain; we found no trial of this product |
| Align DualBiotic Prebiotic + Probiotic Gummies | Bacillus coagulans LactoSpore; inulin | 10 mg (1 billion CFU until at least “best by”); 2.5 g inulin | Different strain; not covered by the 35624 research |
| Align 70 Billion CFU capsules | 6 strains including 35624 (others not named on the page) | 70 billion CFU | No trial of this blend found |
The regular capsule is one a day, with 14- and 28-count packs listed, and the product page says it needs no refrigeration. Other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate and titanium dioxide for color. The DualBiotic gummies are a serving of two, with 20 calories, 3 g of fiber and 1 g of added sugar. Align’s capsule range also includes women’s, bloating-and-digestion, immune and stress formulas that combine 35624 or other strains with added ingredients.
What Align claims vs what the evidence shows
The capsule page says the strain “naturally helps soothe occasional abdominal discomfort, gas, and bloating” and is backed by more than 20 years of research. That research is mostly in people with IBS, a diagnosed condition, while Align’s claims are limited to occasional symptoms.
The trials
- First IBS trial: 77 people with IBS drank a malted milk drink with 10 billion cells of 35624, a different Lactobacillus strain, or plain malted milk for 8 weeks. The 35624 group had lower scores for pain or discomfort, bloating and bowel movement difficulty than placebo for most weeks (O’Mahony 2005).
- Capsule dose trial: 362 women with IBS in primary care took capsules of 1 million, 100 million or 10 billion CFU, or placebo, for 4 weeks. Only the 100 million dose beat placebo for pain, bloating and overall relief; the 1 million and 10 billion doses were not significantly different from placebo, and the highest dose had formulation problems (Whorwell 2006).
- Later U.S. trial: 302 adults with frequent discomfort and bloating who had not seen a doctor for it were randomized to 1 billion CFU a day or placebo for 4 weeks at 10 centers. Both groups improved, with no difference in symptom severity, though the probiotic group had more bloating-free days. One author worked for Procter & Gamble (Ringel-Kulka 2017).
- Open-label studies: in 233 adults with IBS taking 1 billion CFU for 30 days, symptom severity fell from the start, but there was no placebo group and the authors reported fees from Biocodex (Sabaté 2022). A 12-week study of 64 children and teens in Chile had the same design limit and was sponsored by the strain’s maker (Cruchet Muñoz 2024).
What the reviews say
A 2017 meta-analysis found that 35624 on its own, across three trials, did not significantly improve pain, bloating or bowel habit satisfaction in IBS, and called for larger trials (Yuan 2017). A 2026 strain-by-strain meta-analysis of single-strain placebo-controlled trials listed 35624 among the strains that improved key IBS symptoms (Maslennikov 2026). The 2021 American College of Gastroenterology guideline recommends against probiotics in general for overall IBS symptoms, a conditional recommendation based on very low quality evidence, as summarized by NCCIH.
The dose question
The capsule label guarantees 1 billion CFU when made but only 10 million until its “best by” date, and Extra Strength guarantees 50 million. The best-known positive capsule trial found benefit at 100 million but not at 1 million, and later trials used about 1 billion. How many live cells a capsule holds on the day you take it falls somewhere in that range, and no published trial has tested the guaranteed minimum. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that higher CFU counts alone don’t mean greater benefits.
Price
Align’s U.S. product pages do not show prices, so we have not calculated a price per serving. Store prices vary by pack size and retailer.
Who it may suit and who should skip it
- May suit: adults with occasional bloating or a diagnosed IBS who want a single, well-studied strain, ideally after talking with their doctor, and who accept that results in trials were mixed.
- Check the label: if 35624 is the reason you’re buying Align, pick a product that lists it. The DualBiotic gummies use Bacillus coagulans instead.
- Ask a doctor first: the risk of harm from probiotics is greater in people with severe illness or weakened immune systems, according to NCCIH. The ODS fact sheet notes most serious infections occurred in people who were severely ill or immunocompromised, and that many people with yeast-probiotic bloodstream infections had a central venous catheter. The Office of Dietary Supplements also advises caution with supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When to see a doctor
Belly pain, gas and bloating are common, but the NIDDK lists signs that point to something other than IBS: bleeding from the rectum, bloody or black, tarry stools, weight loss and anemia, or a family history of celiac disease, colon cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. See a doctor for any of these instead of starting a probiotic. This article is general information, not medical advice.
Alternatives, including food

- Other strains studied for IBS: the 2026 meta-analysis also found benefits for Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 and Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 (Maslennikov 2026). Our best probiotic guide matches strains to needs.
- Diet: the ACG guideline recommends a limited trial of a low-FODMAP diet for overall IBS symptoms (Lacy 2021), ideally with a dietitian. For everyday gas, see what to eat when gas hurts.
- Fermented foods: in a 17-week trial with 18 people per group, a diet high in fermented foods raised gut microbiome diversity and lowered inflammatory markers (Wastyk 2021). Compare the best yogurt for probiotics and best kefir brands.

What strain is in the Align probiotic?
The core capsules list Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum 35624, earlier called B. infantis 35624 (Align).
Does Align work for IBS?
Trial results are mixed: early trials found symptom relief, a 302-person U.S. trial found no difference from placebo in severity, and the ACG advises against probiotics for overall IBS symptoms (NCCIH).
Do Align gummies contain the same strain?
Not the DualBiotic Prebiotic + Probiotic Gummies, which list Bacillus coagulans LactoSpore and inulin instead of 35624.
